Jaden takes on two Sharks
Jaden takes on two Sharks

Game two of the series brought Scarborough to Peterborough on Sunday. The Atom A IceKats came out flying, dominating the first period. It started on the first shift as Maddy W rushed the puck, got the shot away and fought through to get her own rebound, only to be stopped by the Sharks goalie. Shift two was more of the same as Kari supported the fore checking of Mackenzie whose shot made it to the net and Payton was there for the rebound. It was more of the same as Chelsea banked the puck off the arm of the goalie. It had enough to beat the goalie, but she got enough of the puck to cause it to spin off her arm, down into the crease and out of danger. Although Scarborough was able to get the puck out of their zone, it was definitely Peterborough’s period.

The Kats started the second the same as the first, controlling the play for the first three minutes. Scarborough had their first chance at the 7 minute mark when a Shark attacker was alone in the slot. Laura came up with the save to keep the score at zero’s. The Kats fought right back, just missing on the off-side post on a cross crease pass.

The back and forth play continued and Scarborough capitalized from the slot when the Kats were outnumbered in front of their net. The Kats stormed right back, but the Scarborough tender was up for every challenged the girls threw at her.

Scarborough was penalized for body checking with 2:12 remaining in the period and the Kats controlled the play but were unable to generate any scoring chances.

Just two minutes into the third, Chelsea had a shot off the wing on a rush. The rebound was there and Maddy G couldn’t get to it before getting tied up. The Sharks dominated the play in the third, dumping the puck in on the Kats defence, and standing up at the blue line to thwart any breakout chances.

The Kats definitely played hard both games. They tested the Scarborough goaltender and she was up to the challenge. The girls have Provincials to look forward to and with the determination displayed against the Sharks these last two games, the practices to come, the girls will continue to improve.

The Peterborough Atom A IceKats began the second round of playoffs on the road Saturday and fought to the end only to be outscored 2-1 by the Sharks. The Kats came out with pressure on the first few shifts, catching Scarborough on their heels.

Chelsea was assessed an interference penalty at 7:46 but Peterborough forced the puck keeping the power play to the outside. Scarborough had a chance on a giveaway up the middle but Laura came up with the save on the initial shot and the rebound. Scarborough was assessed a slashing penalty with 3:46 left and then took a too many players penalty only 35 seconds to go two player short. Despite the two penalties, Scarborough managed a break but Megan hustled back to break up the rush.

Scarborough brought the pressure on behind the net in the last minute but Rachel M was physical on the body to tie up two Sharks. The Kats responded on the last shift of the period as Payton, Mackenzie and Chelsea worked hard in the offensive corner and behind the net.

The Kats started fast in the second with more pressure as Jaden worked the puck to Chelsea in front who just missed on the rebound. Scarborough came right back, but Megan controlled the puck, making a nice break out pass to Kari.

It was the Kats turn for a too many players penalty at 6:35 and they survived a close call when Maddy O tripped over Laura, leaving a Shark player alone in the high slot, who couldn’t convert. The Kats killed off the rest of the penalty in the Scarborough zone as the D stood strong at the blue line keeping the puck in.

The Sharks got on the board first with 2:48 left in the period on a bad bounce at the offensive blue line which allowed the Sharks forward to go down the wing. She let the shot go which rolled and bounced past Laura who seemed handcuffed on the shot. The Sharks came in on the resulting faceoff, splitting the defence but this time Laura made no mistake, picking the shot off with her catcher. With a minute remaining, Laura stood tall again when she took away the net on another rush. The Kats almost evened the score on the next rush as Maddy W worked the puck to the net but Mackenzie was tied up and unable to put home the rebound. With 6 seconds left, Scarborough took their second too many players penalty of the game.

The Kats started the third on the power play but weren’t able to generate much offensively. Three minutes in, Maddy W had a sharp angle shot, followed by a shot from Chelsea. Lauren was right there, but once again the Shark defence had the Kats forwards tied up.

It was only a matter of time and at 8:24 the Kats tied the score when Chelsea put the puck high over the blocker. The breakout practice once again showed as Megan moved the puck up the boards to Mackenzie. Chelsea swooped in to take the puck the length of the ice.

The Sharks responded to the goal, bringing on the pressure, hemming the Kats in their own zone. The Kats could only hold them off for so long and at 1:29, two Scarborough players were left alone in front. Our defence forced the puck carrier and the puck popped over to the off side and the girls put the puck home over Laura’s catcher. The girls played a good game and definitely had chances to take the lead.

Kats beach Dolphins in first round

The Peterborough Atom A IceKats had two weeks to prepare for game two of their first round match up against Etobicoke and took it to the Dolphins to move onto round two. Etobicoke came out strong on the first shift, getting the first scoring chance of the game 35 seconds in. Laura had to make a nice stop on the shot from the high slot. The Kats came right back and Maddy O kept the puck in at the point which resulted in Jaden just missing from the slot.

Etobicoke was penalized at 7:31 for tripping Maddy O. Chelsea took the puck to the net and again just missed the net. The penalty didn’t slow down Etobicoke as they opened the scoring just 36 seconds in, converting a shorthanded goal after a giveaway.

With only 10 seconds left in the penalty, the Kats got the shorty back. Maddy O got the puck out to Lauren who cleared the puck to Rachel B. Rachel came off the wing to tie the score at ones. Kari back checked hard, breaking up an Etobicoke rush at the defensive blue line. Etobicoke had no trouble breaking out of their own end on several rushes in the first as the IceKats fore checker found herself with no support.
The second period belonged to the Kats as they spent most of the ten minutes in the Dolphin zone. Three minutes in, Peterborough were breaking out well as Rachel B moved the puck across the neutral zone to Kari. Kari worked the puck to Lauren in front but the Dolphin defence had her tied up.

The Kats missed on another shot just wide at the 6 minute mark, but right after, Chelsea converted on a Dolphin giveaway in the neutral zone. She took control of the puck just outside the blue line, made a nice toe drag on the defence, shooting the puck low, far side to give the Kats the lead.

Not to be outdone, Kari took control of the puck off the resulting face off at centre ice, deeked three players and rung the puck off the crossbar and into the net. Before Etobicoke could react, the score was 3-1. The Kats kept coming on the next three shifts as Kari, Payton and Mackenzie worked hard behind the net and when Etobicoke was able to get control of the puck, Payton was there to recover it and keep the rush alive. Rachel B, Lauren and Chelsea were next up, pressuring the puck. When Etobicoke was able to get control, Rachel M stood up at the point to keep it in. Next up, Maddy G, Jaden and Kari worked the puck hard in the corner and again, were in perfect position to recover the puck and keep the rush going.

With 2:10 left in the period Chelsea took advantage of another Etobicoke giveaway in the neutral zone. After three deeks, she put the puck high glove side to give the Kats a three goal lead. Megan and Payton skated hard to stop a potentially dangerous rush. The Kats got the puck back into the offensive zone and Maddy W’s point shot was stopped by the goalie and covered up before it could be converted. The Kats tried one last play at the buzzer as Jaden got the puck to Chelsea in front, but the goalie was there to stop it.

Etobicoke seemed to catch a second life during the second period break and the play was back and forth for the first minute. The Kats moved the puck well in the neutral zone and half way through the period Lauren just missed the net on the short side. Less than a minute later, Maddy O got a point shot off which the goalie juggled and then corralled the rebound before the Kats could capitalize. At 4:14 Chelsea capped a three goal effort, going blocker side to put the game out of reach. The play started on a nice break out with Maddy O moving the puck up the boards to Jaden. Jaden hit Chelsea up the middle.

The breakout success continued with Alana making another great first pass to Mackenzie. The defence had a good solid defensive game, playing physical along the boards and in front of Laura, who was steady when called on. Megan capped the Kats offensive explosion with 53.6 seconds remaining, when her shot from the top of circle eluded the goalie high glove side. Jaden and Maddy G earned the assists on the tally.

The Kats take on a well rested Scarborough Sharks team in round two. Although the Sharks will provide tough competition, if the girls pressure the puck, make the first pass and go hard to the net, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

The Peterborough Atom A IceKats traveled to the MasterCard Centre on Saturday morning and came home with a win to take an early lead in the best of three playoff series against the Dolphins.

The Kats started the game playing aggressively and had three good scoring chances but couldn’t beat the Etobicoke goalie.
Laura had minimal work throughout the first and the Kats kept the pressure up with chances in close. Rachel B was penalized late in the period but the team killed it off.

The Dolphins came out hard in the second, but couldn’t covert on any of their chances as Laura was there to shut the door. Four minutes into the frame the Kats went on a power play, but the second closed out a zero’s.

The beginning of the third belonged to Peterborough as Maddy W went end to end to bury her own rebound when the goalie couldn’t control the puck. Just over a minute later, Maddy O was sent off for a penalty but Laura was there once again to stymie the Dolphin attackers. Chelsea was almost able to put the game out of reach, pinging the puck off the crossbar, but in the end, one goal would be all the team would require.

With the one goal win, the Kats take game one of the best of three series. The girls are off until February 18 when Etobicoke is in Peterborough for game two.

Kats finish season with 1 win, 2 losses

The Peterborough Atom A IceKats began the last week of the regular season with a win in a home and home series against the Wolves. The team travelled to Whitby on Monday January 23 and took a 2-1 win home with them. The girls started the game with two strong shifts. The forwards fore-checked hard and the defence managed to keep the puck in the offensive zone when challenged.
Whitby had a good chance on the third shift, but put the puck over the net. Whitby struck first blood at the 6 minute mark when a miscue at the defensive blue line resulted in a 2 on 1. The shot went high again, but this time connected with the net.

The Kats kept the pressure up and with 1:30 left in the frame, Megan’s point shot was heading for the lower short side, until it deflected off a Whitby skate. The team worked hard on the back-check all period to thwart several Whitby rushes.

Whitby got off to a good start in the second period, resulting in a shot that just missed on the far side. The IceKats fought back with a good effort on a pass out of the corner from Rachel B to Lauren in front of the net. Whitby came right back on a rush and pinged one off the post to keep lead at one.

The Kats evened the score with 4:31 into the second on an end to end rush by Chelsea. The play was started by some hard work in the defensive zone corner by Alana and Mackenzie. The high glove shot came after numerous “beauty” moves.

On the next shift, Kari got another scoring opportunity off the face off but was unable to convert. The Wolves had most of the play in the second, but in the end, it’s the score board that matters. The score remained tied after two periods.

The Kats dominated the first few shifts of the third period and Maddy W just missed the net on another point shot from the D. Whitby took a slashing penalty 3:44 into the period, but the power play was short lived when the line of Kari, Rachel B and Lauren buried the game winner just 13 seconds into the penalty. The line got the puck to the net and all three girls were fighting hard for the rebound. Kari was there to clean up the garbage and tuck the puck home.

Whitby brought on the pressure in the last few minutes, but hard work along the boards by Megan and Payton stymied Whitby’s chances. The girls held on for the 2-1 victory.

GAME 2
Whitby traveled to Peterborough on Friday January 27 for the rematch. The first period was a fast paced affair, with end to end action. Both teams had some good scoring chances and Laura had to at the top of her game to keep the score at zeros.

With only 29 seconds played in the second, Whitby scored what would prove to be the winner on this night. Whitby scored the insurance marker at 8:56 of the third when the shot seemed to handcuff Laura. The girls generated some chances in the third but couldn’t finish the play.

The coaches pulled Laura in the dying moments of the third to generate some offence, but Whitby capitalized on the empty net to seal the game up 3-0.

GAME 3
The last regular season game was played on Saturday January 28 at home against a physical Leaside team. Rachel B started the game with a rush, putting her backhand wide. Maddy O was assessed a tripping penalty just 41 seconds into the game. Maddy W joined her at 8:31 to give the Wildcats a 2 player advantage. The penalty killers did a great job of keeping the Leaside players to the outside and they were unable to generate any scoring chances.

The Kats iced the puck on two successive plays, which resulted in a dangerous scoring opportunity off the resulting face off. Leaside kept the pressure up, but the Kats caught a break when the whistle went a little early and the puck went in after. Leaside got the last gift of the period on a similar play at the other end with only 10 seconds left.

The Kats started the second strong, and were inches from opening the scoring when Maddy W rang a shot off the crossbar 2 minutes in. The Leaside defence were tying the Kat forwards up all night. Leaside got on the board at the 5:39 mark when their forwards out battled the Kats in the corner, putting a nice shot upstairs.

The Kats didn’t lie down and put together a scoring opportunity when Chelsea and Maddy G fought for a rebound. Maddy G kept up her tenacious pursuit of the puck in the offensive corner, working the puck to Kari. She was able to get the shot away but kept the rebound from Jaden who was ready to pounce in front of the net.

Leaside took a two goal lead 3:52 into the third on a shot from the high slot when two Leaside players were left alone in front of the net. The Kats didn’t give up and got to within one at with 2:10 left to play on a shot by Chelsea coming off the wing. Maddy O worked the puck up the boards to Maddy G who chipped the puck to Chelsea for the rush.

It was too little, too late as the final score was 2-1. The girls start their playoff series this Saturday against Etobicoke.
