Sabres Take Silver Medal in Provincials!

Posted by: Justin MacLeod on Sun Mar 14th 2010 9:07pm

In a must-win to advance semi-final game this morning against the Souris Seahawks, the Sabres put in a tremendous effort to come out on top 2-1 in front of an excited crowd of fans from both Belfast and Souris.

This put the Sabres in the Championship against the Iron Horses from North River, who proved to be relentless in the Championship. While Belfast tied the Iron Horses in yesterday's round robin matchup, the Iron Horses who only lost one game all year, made no mistakes en route to a victory over Belfast in the Championship game.

Both teams were pleased with their result and commented on the opponent's clean play. This ended the Provincial tourney and the season on a high note.

We're looking forward to another great season next year. Team, way to go you gave it your all, had fun and grew as a team again this year. Way to go Sabres!!!

Sabres Win the Valentines Tournament!

Posted by: Justin MacLeod on Sun Feb 14th 2010 9:25am

In an exciting 1-0 finale over last year's fellow tournament finalists, Kensington, the Sabres capped their perfect 4-0 record to win the Championship of their annual Valentine's Tournament!

This is the 2nd year in a row Belfast and Kensington have squared off in the final of the 6-team tournament. The teams also faced each other in Provincials last year to a 0-0 tie, so the games have all been hard-fought and close. Belfast has yet to allow the strong Kensington team to score a goal and the team needed the shutout to win yesterday, as Kensington's goaltender played spectacularly in allowing the Sabres only one goal.

Liam T earned the shutout for the win with great play of his own, as well as strong defensive play of the team including great break-ups of rushes by the defense, and hard back-checking by the forward players.

Landon T notched the game's only goal by grabbing his own rebound, after a pass from defense-man Sam T early in the game, and the goal proved to be enough as the teams battled back and forth with chances throughout the match.

The tournament started out with two divisions: Central with Sherwood Sabres, Sherwood Falcons and Soutshide Lynx, and then an East/West division with Belfast Sabres, Summerside Capitals and Kensington Ice Cats. The two divisions squared off against each other, and after 6 games, the East/West all had perfect 2-0 records, while the Central each fell to 0-2 in mostly close 1 and 2 goal games.

This left the remaining 3 games to determine which 2 teams would come out on top of the round-robin to make it to the Championship.

Summerside then squared off against the Sherwood Sabres, and the Sabres played a strong game, jumping out to an early lead and never letting up, to defeat the Capitals 6-3. This left the fate of Kensington and Belfast in their own hands as they prepared to play their final round-robin games.

Kensington made no mistakes as they played a strong game to defeat the gritty Sherwood Falcons 5-2 with an empty-net goal, to guarantee themselves a spot in the Championship.

Belfast then needed a win and got one as they defeated Southside Lynx 7-1. This setup a repeat of last year's showdown between Belfast and Kensington. Belfast had no time to relax and relish the Southside victory as they had to stay suited up and go directly into a back to back game in the Championship vs. Kensington.

In the final showdown Belfast showed their heart and determination to cap a long 4-game tournament day, and didn't let up for a single shift as they continually pressured Kensington and racked up scoring chance after scoring chance. Kensington's Goalie Johnathan T continued to play as he had the rest of the tournament, making save after save to keep his team in the game. Kensington's sharp-shooters #7 Andrew W and #11 Drew G had notched a number of goals earlier in the tournament but were turned away by the able defensive play of the Belfast Team and strong net-minding of Belfast's Liam T, as the shutout was his 2nd of the tournament in allowing only 4 goals over 4 games.

All teams commented on having a great time, enjoying the hospitality of the Belfast team with a great selection of food throughout the day and good competitive and fun games.

Belfast proudly circled the ice with their Championship Banner and had pictures taken with the new glass trophy specially made for the tournament, and looks forward to having their team's name emblazoned on the trophy and to defending the Championship next year!

Way to go Sabres!!!
