Fusion blank Cardinals girls hockey team

Posted by: David Smart on Fri Feb 26th 2010 9:46pm

The St. Croix Valley Fusion girls hockey team took advantage of a few mistakes by Chi-Hi/McDonell and ended the Cardinals season, 4-0.

The Cardinals were only out-shot in the game by four and Chi-Hi/McDonell had a few more opportunities on the power play than the Fusion, but St. Croix Valley still left with the victory.

“We did a lot of things we needed to do. There were a hand-full of mistakes and we didn’t make a lot of them,” Cardinals coach Andrew Skelton said. “The couple of mistakes we did make they capitalized on.”

Although the Fusion committed five more penalties than the Cardinals, and one of those was with a Chi-Hi/McDonell penalty, St. Croix Valley changed up its penalty kill. Chi-Hi/McDonell (10-13-1) was left trying to counter.

“They pressed extremely hard,” Skelton said. “They’re very good and you gotta be able to react quickly.

“We didn’t capitalize on our opportunities.”

The Fusion (24-4-1) advance to the WIAA sectional semifinal to play Hudson, a 3-2 winner in double overtime against Hayward Saturday in River Falls.

Tanzer tallies OT winner against Blizzard

Posted by: David Smart on Sat Feb 20th 2010 9:23am

The Burnett County Blizzard didn’t want Allie Tanzer to beat them in Thursday’s WIAA regional final.

She did anyway.

Tanzer not only scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give Chi-Hi/McDonell a 4-3 win, but she also was involved in every Chi-Hi goal.

Burnett coach Tim Bennett said he knew what Tanzer could do and that his team made a concentrated effort to stop her.

“We tried to keep (Tanzer) off the board, that was our goal,” he said. “We made a mistake and she got us in the end, though. With a player like her, you can’t do that.”

That mistake came three minutes into overtime when Chi-Hi collected a turnover in Burnett’s zone. Alexa Bowe provided the assist to Tanzer, who fired the puck past the goalie and sent her Cards to the next round.

Chi-Hi coach Andy Skelton said that’s what he has come to expect from his team’s leading scorer.

“When she gets that many shots on net and that many opportunities, eventually one of them has got to fall,” he said. “It was a great low, hard shot on the right side. We’ve been preaching a long time to her to shoot the puck low and hard and it paid off when it counted most.”

Tanzer also had another big goal in the third period to tie the game at 2-2. She collected the opening faceoff of the period, glided in and knotted the score.

The momentum stayed on Chi-Hi’s side when Bowe scored four minutes later with Tanzer and Kendra Bowe assisting.

Chi-Hi had more chances in the third, including four straight minutes of pressure on an extended power play because of two separate minors.

Burnett killed off both penalties only to get called for another minor with 5:59 to play.

What could’ve been a chance for Chi-Hi to add to its lead wound up being a positive for the Blizzard when Kassandra Lien scored a short-handed goal at 13:46 off a turnover.

“I don’t know if we lost our focus or if we were a little bit tired because they were on the ice quite a bit, that first group in our power play,” Skelton said. “It was a mistake and fortunately it didn’t cost us the game. That shows the character of our team. You give up a goal like that, you put your tail between your legs and the game can be over, but they didn’t. They kept coming at them and it paid off.”

Burnett failed to score on a regulation power play of its own before overtime and Tanzer’s goal.

Chi-Hi’s offense wasn’t quite as explosive at the beginning of the game, despite outshooting the Blizzard the whole way.

The Cards also outshot Burnett by 29 in their previous meeting this season on Jan. 14, which was a 4-2 loss for Chi-Hi.

Burnett’s Tiff Meyer was the goalie both games and made 39 saves in Tuesday’s contest compared to 16 for Lauren Scobie.

Meyer’s work and the effort of the Blizzard’s defense made a 1-0 game after the first period and a 2-0 game early in the second seem like a rerun of the frustrating regular-season loss.

Skelton said his team’s plan to avoid a repeat was to just keep going at Meyer.

“Goalies can really dictate a hockey game sometimes when they get in the zone,” he said. “You just tell the girls, ‘You’ve got to keep going to the net, you’ve got to keep crashing the net, look for rebounds, get in front of her and look for screens and find any way you can to get that goalie rattled.’ Fortunately, we found the back of the net four times against a very solid goaltender.”

Chi-Hi’s Britni Sullivan got the Cards on the board first with a goal at 15:19 in the second. Tanzer provided the assist on the score, which got the Cards within one.

Tanzer and Alexa Bowe did the rest and sent the Cards to the next round against top-seeded St. Croix Valley Fusion. The sectional semifinal game will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in River Falls.

Cranstons power Fusion past Chi-Hi/McDonell

Posted by: David Smart on Sun Jan 31st 2010 12:23pm

It seemed like there were Cranstons everywhere at Chippewa Area Ice Arena Saturday night.

Lilly Cranston scored a hat trick while Alice Cranston and Sally Cranston each scored single goals as the top-ranked St. Croix Valley Fusion defeated Chippewa Falls/McDonell’s girls hockey team, 6-2.

Lilly Cranston scored a goal in each of the three periods with Alice Cranston and Sally Cranston each scoring in the second period.

The Cardinals (7-9-1, 1-5-1 Big Rivers Conference) got goals from Britney Sullivan and Allie Tanzer in the game, but the depth of the Fusion (17-3-1, 7-0 BRC) was too much.

“We lost a little bit of focus in the second period and they’ll take advantage of that. They just keep coming at you,” Chi-Hi/McDonell coach Andy Skelton said. “There’s a reason why they haven’t lost to a team from Wisconsin in over two years.”

The Cardinals depth was further hampered Saturday with the news of Sage Paletta being out the remainder of the season because of injury and Rebecca Foster unavailable until the playoffs.

Lauren Scobie withstood a barrage in net, making 35 saves on 41 shots she faced. The Cardinals were outshot, 41-17.
