It seemed like there were Cranstons everywhere at Chippewa Area Ice Arena Saturday night.
Lilly Cranston scored a hat trick while Alice Cranston and Sally Cranston each scored single goals as the top-ranked St. Croix Valley Fusion defeated Chippewa Falls/McDonell’s girls hockey team, 6-2.
Lilly Cranston scored a goal in each of the three periods with Alice Cranston and Sally Cranston each scoring in the second period.
The Cardinals (7-9-1, 1-5-1 Big Rivers Conference) got goals from Britney Sullivan and Allie Tanzer in the game, but the depth of the Fusion (17-3-1, 7-0 BRC) was too much.
“We lost a little bit of focus in the second period and they’ll take advantage of that. They just keep coming at you,” Chi-Hi/McDonell coach Andy Skelton said. “There’s a reason why they haven’t lost to a team from Wisconsin in over two years.”
The Cardinals depth was further hampered Saturday with the news of Sage Paletta being out the remainder of the season because of injury and Rebecca Foster unavailable until the playoffs.
Lauren Scobie withstood a barrage in net, making 35 saves on 41 shots she faced. The Cardinals were outshot, 41-17.

For the first time, the Chippewa Falls/McDonell girls hockey team will go through what most other high school sports teams go through in their programs.
That’s asking new faces to fill in for some stellar performers from the season before.
The Cardinals came into the 2009-10 season looking to replace all-state skater Mikayla Hogan, all-league defenseman Megan White and three-year goalie Kiara McChesney.
“When you lose what we lost from last year’s team, you count on the girls you have to step in and get the job the done,” Cardinals coach Andrew Skelton said. “We have a lot of girls here who have two and three years of varsity.”
Allie Tanzer is the top returning scorer for the Cardinals. Through the team’s first three games, Tanzer had five goals and two assists.
“She keeps getting better and better,” Skelton said.
Tanzer is a captain along with Kendra Bowe. Bowe made the switch back to the blue line as a defenseman midway through last season and is paired with newcomer Kayla Bowe. The duo are sisters.
There’s a third Bowe on the team, Alexa, but she is unrelated to Kendra and Kayla.
Alexa Bowe, Sam Phephles and Marlayna Luebstorf all return to the front lines for Chi-Hi/McDonell this season.
“We need their experience and leadership,” Skelton said.
Another key defenseman that’s returned this season is Rebecca Foster. She’s versatile, as she’s also listed as a forward for this season, and brings three previous years of varsity play to the table.
There is a class of six sophomores that are on this varsity team this season. One, Sage Paletta, recorded an assist this season.
Skelton said the new faces, the six sophomores plus freshmen Kayla Bowe and Laura Scobie, will learn a lot in the differences between varsity hockey and under-14 travel hockey.
While most of the other positions for Chi-Hi/McDonell have some experience for the Cardinals to lean on, that’s not the case in net.
Senior Michaela Holsinger has played some this season, but right now much of the time between the pipes has belonged to Scobie.
Skelton said the team will work both goaltenders this season.
“We feel Laura is a little bit further ahead, but it’s a long season,” he said. “When the playoffs come, we’ll make the right decision.”
The Cardinals continue to have one of the toughest schedules in the state. Chi-Hi/McDonell not only faces two other ranked teams from within the BRC, but also three other top 10 teams.
The Cardinals play top-ranked St. Croix Valley Fusion and the Eau Claire Stars twice as well as single games against Fond du Lac/Waupun, the Central Wisconsin Storm and Hayward. Chi-Hi/McDonell also is participating in a three-game, three-day tournament in Farmington, Minn.

Chippewa Falls/McDonell’s girls hockey proved one thing to itself: they can play with the best team in Wisconsin.
But the St. Croix Valley Fusion showed why they’re no. 1 with a 7-3 victory against the Cardinals.
The Fusion (6-0-1, 2-0 Big Rivers Conference) scored four third period goals to pull away from the Cardinals.
The first two periods of play, with the score ending 3-3, is what encouraged Chi-Hi/McDonell coach Andrew Skelton.
“I was proud of the team. We played extremely well in the first two periods. The wheels just kind of fell off in the third,” he said. “(But), it was a great effort.”
Skelton noted it was the Fusion’s depth that really was the key as Chi-Hi (1-3, 0-3 BRC) couldn’t match it.
Sam Phephles, Kendra Bowe and Allie Tanzer all tallied goals for the Cardinals.
Alice Cranston had two goals and two assists and Lilly Cranston had two goals and an assist to lead the Fusion.
