The jury is out, the question is answered – if you want to get the most out of your hockey team, let them run around like crazy and spend as much time in the pool as possible. This was the strategy of Coach “Dough”1 Robinson the day of the last game of the season for the Atom “A” Eagles. His game plan started late on Friday night after a discouraging day at the rink – the instructions were to let the kids stay up as long as they wanted and then allow them to sleep in in the morning. In the morning the Hearne’s and Carters were cooking eggs and bacon followed by a solid two hours of nerf gun battles. To top off the training, the team was subjected to three hours of swimming and wrestling in the pool. The results speak for themselves.
The Eagles took to the ice at 3:30 pm and Captain Claw Coles scored on his own net in the first minute of the game . . . at least that’s what it looked like . . . what? There are two Eagles teams on the ice! The Eagles were matched against the Colbourn Chiefs but the Chiefs forgot their hockey sweaters 2 back at the hotel, so the kind Eagles let them play in more than their shoulder pads.
Having two Eagles on the ice created confusion on more than one occasion but for the fans, we just had fun with it. The Colbourn parents cheered for the green Eagles and the Ennismore parents for the white, but from time to time one of the real Eagles would pass the puck to the fakes.
In the end the Coach’s preparation paid off as the White Eagles flew to the top with a 6 – 1 victory in a game that meant more to the officials than the kids.
And that was it, the final game of the season. Fulfilled, enough, over, satisfied, dinners with the whole family again, ahhhhh . . . boy I’ll miss it.
1 Ask Claw “Tony” Coles about the name change.
2 Don Cherry says it’s “Sweaters” not “Jerseys”. Jerseys are for football.

The Ennismore Atom "A" Eagles are enjoying the pool and nerf gun wars at the Carriage Ridge Resort at Horseshoe Valley this weekend. The boys can be heard screaming and shouting military commands from the highest balcony and the lowest ravine - it is quite a mission . . . its just that no one is really clear as to who the enemy is.
In an attempt to keep the competition on the ice to a low key level, the Eagles have decided to focus their combativeness to the stairwells and ditches. So, loosing 5 - 0 and 5 - 2 in their first two games Friday felt more like a victory of fun! Their efforts to give the other teams a "good feeling" as they end their seasons, can be seen as no more than exceptional sportsmanship - what a great group of kids!
On the ice the Eagles budding defence star Catchem Kangas actually drew a penalty yesterday, someone body checked him! What a great accomplishment Catchem! See, this is the sportsmanship I am talking about? In the same spirit if fun, Coach Robinson handed the bench over to Captain "M" Hearne, what an excellent coaching development oppourtunity! Way to go guys!!
The Eagles will be heading into their final game in this tournament this afternoon, where they face the Sailors of Port Colbourn. We'll see what the collective will of the team is then . . . will they switch their competitive ambitions to the ice, or will they pull out the silly string and fill the Referees skates with green and pink stuffing. Only time will tell. Check back tonight for the results!

The Brighton Braves played a strong game today to defeat the Eagles in their last home ice appearance. The Eagles made the trip to Brighton today after defeating the Braves in 5 consecutive starts this season, the last one with the Eagles topping the Braves 5 - 1.
This game featured Brighton's Novice call up goalie Travis Lyttle. I don't know what they feed those Brighton goalies, but this little (no pun intended) goalie was hot! The Eagles threw everything at him and were only able to get four past the goal line. Good thing for Travis, B-Man Budnick missed on a beautiful feed from T-2 Walsh! B-Man's shot reminded the fans of that Shea Webber shot that went through the net in the Olympics, only B-Man's shot just missed the open net. (what a bullet! Speaking of feeding . . . what are the Budnick's feeding him?)
The Eagles had a respectable outing, but we just out played by a determined Brighton team, who wanted to take the last one at home . . . who can blame them?
Coach Robinson will have a bit of tuning up to do and hopefully have a full roster back on the ice for the Elmvale Maples syrup Hockey Tournament coming up this weekend. The Eagles have all the right stuff to do well and even with this one, if they continue to come together as a team. Practices are Monday and Wednesday at 6:00 PM in Ennismore to prepare for this season finale.

There was a standing ovation when Luker Robinson returned to the ice today after several months away with a broken wrist. The Looooooos were heard in the crowd each time the veteran blue liner touched the puck - a wonderful surprise return to the lineup.
The Eagles, excited to have Loooooo back decided to celebrate with multiple trips to the penalty box, which didn't help their bid for a win. Then Stonewall Hearn was so happy Loooooo was back that he raised his hands with glee, accidentally knocking the puck out of the air with his stick and onto the goal line, which was then knocked into the net by the Stars. Oh well, he was happy to see Looooo back.
The Eagles lost game but came out smiling, because we have the Looooo back! Great game Luker, everyone else played well too, just too much time in the box.
Eagles are on the road again tomorrow in Brighton at 3:00 PM. Ok guys, Luker is back, now focus on the game! :-)

The Atom "A" Eagles were wondering what things would look like against Norwood with 7 of their regulars away in Florida for the March Break, especially after a nail biter 6-5 win over the Hornets, just a week ago.
Leave it up to the likes of Posty, Captain Big Joe Foley, Taz Abrams, "D" Healey and Golden Glove Hudder to keep the Eagles on top! The scoring opened when Mad Dog (and he gets that name for his size) Mills, sniped a top self laser that had the Hornets defence ducking! Followed by a few hard rushes by Posty, the sniper called up for this game, followed by his second in as many games by Post to Post D-man Wake.
Golden Glove had a solid game allowing just two shots past him in the 45 minute contest, a solid performance as always.
The Eagles have the week off (except for a practice on thursday night) before a two game weekend, including a Saturday match up against Napanee at home and a visit to the shores of Lake Ontario against Brighten on Sunday.
