The Hellfish Start Year With A Thrilling Comeback, 3-2 win in OT!

Posted by: Scott Schloesser on Wed Nov 09th 2011 9:25am

The 2011-2012 season opened versus an experienced D2 team in the Polar Bears. The Flying Hellfish were caught flat-footed in the first period and the Bears scored 2 quick goals. The Hellfish quickly stopped the bleeding and began to put the pressure on the Bears goalie. The forwards did a great job of working the zone and getting shots…it was only a matter of time before one went in.

1:13 into the 3rd period, Bryan Hvezda got a wicked wrist shot passed the goalie into the net. The Flying Hellfish had a renewed energy and stepped up their game. Later in the period, Tony Schloesser scored his first of the year to tie it up. The last 5 minutes of the game were well played, both teams had multiple scoring chances but the goalies had other ideas.

The game went to overtime and 53 seconds in, Dylan Millet score the game-winning goal during a scrum in front of the net and secured the first win of the season. Millet earned the Hellfish Hard Hat Player of the Game award for the goal and effort. But all the ‘Fish played a huge role in the game and should be excited for the upcoming season.

Up next is the Maroons D2 team, lead by captain Tim Baird and brick wall goalie Dan Ginter. Another veteran team of the D2 ranks and summer teammates of the “Fish, this should prove to be a tough and fun challenge!

The 11-12 Season is Here and the Hellfish Are Ready For Battle!

The Fall Tournament was a great experience for the Flying Hellfish. The AHA and BIG hosted a successful weekend with fun at by all. With a record of 0-2-1 in three very close games, the Hellfish have shown that they are ready for the upcoming D2 season. They were able to skate together as a team for the first time in months and see what they did well and need to address. With the addition on Jim Way in net and Tony Schloesser, Brad Hvezda and Bryan Hvezda skating, the Hellfish are going to have a competitive run this year in D2.

The first two weeks of the AHA season were announced this week and the Flying Hellfish will square off with D2 veterans the Polar Bears in a season opening battle November 3rd, 9:30 pm at Breck School Ice Arena. First 5 fans in attendance will receive a free skating lesson with a long time Hellfish legend to be determined at a later date.

Old logo...didn't see one for this year.
Old logo...didn't see one for this year.

This coming weekend is the AHA Fall Tourney and the Hellfish will be ready. Armed with a few skaters from the Marauders and Horde, we are going to skate 3 games in 25 hours to get the hockey season started.

AHA Fall Tourney Schedule: http://www.ahahockey.com/TCAHA/TourneySchedule.php

9/30/11 Fri 5:15 PM Rink 2 Fighting Loons vs. Flying Hellfish
10/1/11 Sat 12:15 PM Rink 1 Flying Hellfish vs. Wolf-Rayets
10/1/11 Sat 6:30 PM Rink 1 Flying Hellfish vs. Maroons

We are also please to announce a few new players to the Orange and Black attack, Brad Hvezda and Jim Way. Brad Hvezda comes from parts unknown, a man from the sticks. Ok, he is Bryan’s twin brother and will help add size and toughness to the front lines. But don’t let that fool you; he has a wicked wrist shot that is going to get past the most seasoned goalies. Jim Way is joining the Flying Hellfish between the pipes. He is a long time skater who has gone to the dark side and loves it. Jim will be a solid net minder and foundation behind our D. He experience as a skater and hockey sense will be a great addition to our team.

Summer Is Almost Over...And It's Time for Hockey

It has been a busy summer for the Flying Hellfish of the AHA. After a well deserved break from hockey, seven ‘Fish joined up with the Maroons to become the Rough Riders. This team worked hard and showed A LOT of improvement over the 12 game season.

We have had a few players move on and leadership quickly jumped on a few free agents that would improve the team. Bill Berg, a young multi-sport athlete is quick and has an endless motor. He will fly past defensemen and put some pucks in the net for sure! Bryan Hvezda adds size and skill to the ‘Fish roster. Coming in at 6’4”, Bryan will be a known force on the ice, whether its at F or D. Tony Schloesser comes to us from JMS level 2. Tony has a great vision on the ice and love to make the perfect pass. Please welcome these three to the Orange and Black Attack!

And lastly, The Flying Hellfish captains will be hosting a Social Skate at The Pong on August 13th, from 6-7:30. The rink is a Min-e-Rink. So we are thinking of doing a 3 on 3 game and maybe a small skills challenge. There is an attached bar and grill (Fireside Pizza) that we can walk to (don't even have to go outside) for drinks and dinner following. Get out on the ice and have a little fun. We haven't skated together in while and this is great, low key skate and social hour.

End of the Inaugural Season and Summer Break!

The 10-11 Flying Hellfish
The 10-11 Flying Hellfish

The Flying Hellfish made extraordinary strides during their first season in the AHA. In the weeks leading up to the championship game, the ‘Fish were ramping up play and knocking on the Mastodons front door wanting the gold. Needless to say, the final game was going to be close. The Mastodons jumped up quick 5-0 in the first period before the Hellfish broke a sweat. The Orange and Black attack then started playing their game, hustle and tenacious d, and fought back, tying it up 5-5 early in the third. A body check penalty call on the Hellfish late in the game seemed to be the tipping point. Whether it was the correct call or not, the Mastodons scored to go up 6-5 with seven minutes left. Even with pulling the goalie and getting a number of great scoring chances, the ‘Fish could not pull off the same magic they did in game one to tie it up late. Once again, the Flying Hellfish were close to the ‘dons. Next year fellas…watch out!

Have a fun and restful summer! Over the break, some of the Hellfish will be skating in the AHA Summer League, Hockey Finder, or JMS. Others will be in their basement, listening to the Rocky IV workout montage and lifting a log over their head while growing a killer beard. Whatever you choose to do, enjoy and get pumped for next year! Please keep an eye on your email as we are going to have a meeting early in June to discuss many issues for next year as we make our leap into the D2 division. Thanks for a great first season!
