Back to Back Championships! Go Hawks Go!

ST. VITAL ARENA - Hollywood couldn't have wriiten a better story. Last nights game between the Sturgeon Heights Blackhawks and Fort Garry Flyers Red was what the game was expected to be...a barnburner.

This would be the 6th matchup between the two teams this year. Both teams ended the regular season with 31 pts, tied for top spot in the Winnipeg West League. The regular season matchups were tied at one a piece, but the Hawks had the upper hand in the playoffs, making it to the championship series by knocking the Flyers down to the B-Side with a 4-3 win in OT. But like the determined team they are, the Flyers climbed back up the ladder, ready to redeem themselves in the championship finals.

With the Hawks blasting the Flyers, 7-3 in the first game, the Flyers fought hard in game two. With the score being 2-2 after the third and OT solving nothing, the Hawks and Flyers needed to re-play game two, setting the stage for last nights battle of the top teams.

Fans on both sides were on the edge of their seats with the solid back and forth gameplay on both ends. The Flyers however struck first at 10:56 of the 1st, with a nice shot through a crowd, handcuffing netminder Dylan Phillips. The Flyers left the first with a 1-0 lead.

As the second period action began, the tension was high for both fans and players. In total 7 penalties for a total of 14 minutes were assesed in the 2nd period alone, these two teams were battle ready and we not backing down from each other. 2 minutes into the second, Hawks Center, Jalen Hoilett scored his 8th of the playoffs, tying the score at one a piece. Hawks fans exploded, giving the team the extra boost they needed...and it showed. The Hawks continued to press, until at 6:31 of the 2nd when Hoilett put one on the tape of Ethan Robson, banging in another goal, his 8th of the playoffs and pulling the Hawks 1 goal up on the Flyers. The Flyers has a response of their own, tying up the game at 2-2, and setting up the third periord to be a tense one.

Again, like last game, both teams played solid defensivley throughout the 3rd, blocking shots and both goalies yet again standing on their heads, making one outstanding save after another. But at 9:14 of the 3rd, the Hawks capitalized on a power play opportunity, with Ryan Gottfried blasting a low shot from the right point, sending it past the left pad of the Flyers goalie and putting the Hawks back in the lead.

With the game all but won, and with 17 seconds left, the unthinkable happened, the Hawks were called for one of the forwards covering the puck up in the crease. The result? The Flyers get a penalty shot. One of the Flyers more talented forwards would get the opportunity. You could hear a pin drop in the old barn in St. Vital last night as the Flyers forward started to skate towards the Hawks net and netminder Dylan Phillips, who was challenging the forward at the top of the ringette line. Phillips followed the forwards every move as he moved closer to the net, finally deking to the right side and then raising his arms in celebration. The Flyers tied it....or did they? In a spectacular move, Phillips stretched out, managing to save the puck, the forward had not seen that, but the Referee did, calling a no goal. The Hawks ran out the remaining seconds winning the 10A1 crown. When the banner was presented, the team decided to send the hero of the game, Dylan Phillips to accept it.

For 10 of the 12 members of the Hawks, this title makes 2 in a row, winning the 9A1 championship as the Bourkevale Bruins, and under the coaching of Kurt Gottfried, Brent Ostermann, Will Gibbs and Kurtis Robson. For Zach Burdz and Brett Harrison, who met the Bruins in last years final, playing for Kirkfield-Westwood and losing in two straight, it was nice to be in the other dressing room this time. Both played strong all year and gelled with the team almost instantly, like they were here last year.

A championship is something to be remembered. Back to Back championships are something these boys will never forget.

GAME 2 CONCLUDES IN A 2-2 STALEMATE, GAME 3 TONIGHT

Posted by: Tim Brewer on Wed Mar 21st 2012 10:16am

NOTRE DAME ARENA - The Flyers won't go down without a fight. They proved that last night in front of a packed house at the Notre Dame Arena.

All Hawks fans hoping for the team to raise the banner last night will have to save whats left of their hair and fingernails for tonight, as both teams skated to a 2-2 tie, with overtime solving nothing.

Fort Garry came out on top first, popping in a single goal less then 5 minutes into the game. The Hawks came out a bit flat, and the bounces just didn't seem to be going their way. Just 2:08 into the second, the Flyers snuck another one past goaltender Dylan Phillips to take a 2-0 lead.

That was a wake up call for the Hawks, with the defense tightening up and the offence putting on the pressure. The goaltender for the Flyers stood on his head, stopping everything that was put at the net. With just over two minutes left in the second, Ryan Ostermann finally solved him, scoring his 10th goal of the playoffs, making it 2-1 going into the 3rd.

The Hawks pressed in the 3rd, and with 1:43 left in the game, Kody Gibbs pass to Shaun Bohemier in the front of the net was tipped by a Flyers player and went past the Flyers Netminder, making the score 2-2 at the end of the 3rd going into OT.

3 posts, and about 4 spectacular saves from Hawks Netminder Dylan Phillips and the Flyers Goaltender, left the crowd wanting more at the end of OT, but thats where it ended. Until tonight's game, which will be an extra game added due to the unresolved OT tie.

Tonight will be a different story. Game 3 of a possible 4 games will take place at St. Vital Arena, where the Hawks will once again try to take home the Banner. If the game runs into OT, it will carry on until there is a winner. If tonights game is anything like last nights, Hawks and Flyer fans will be preparing for a Barnburner. Let the nail biting and hair pulling begin.

Robson, Thomson, Ostermann lead Hawks to a convincing 7-3 Win, lead series 1-0

NOTRE DAME ARENA - Coming into last nights game against the Flyers, the Hawks knew they would be hungry for a win, after knocking them down to the B-Side in a 4-3 OT win last week. It was too close for comfort, and the Hawks needed a big game and to come out of the gates flying. Ethan Robson, Colbee Thomson and Ryan Ostermann made sure that the Hawks got the breathing room they needed.

Thomson started the Hawks scoring early, putting the puck past the Flyers netminder early in the first period and giving the boys a boost early. Exactly one minute later, Robson would score, putting the Hawks up 2-0 early. Just a minute and a half later, Robson would find the back of the net again, making it 3-0 Hawks.

The Flyers were quick to respond, scoring 30 seconds later, putting them two goals back at 3-1, getting them within two.

With 10 seconds left in the 1st, Robson would yet again twang the twine, scoring his 3rd goal of the night and a natural Hat-Trick, bring the Hawks ahead by 3. The second periord was all Hawks, with Thomson getting his second of the night and Robson getting his 4th, making it 6-1 buy the end of the second.

In the third, it looked like the Flyers were poised to make a game of it, scoring a goal 14 seconds into the third and a second 3 minutes later. The Hawks however tightened up and shut the Flyers down for the rest of the night, with Ryan Ostermann putting the cap on the game, scoring with 4:30 left in the game, giving him a 4 point night as well (1G-3A).

It was a complete team effort last night, playing solid defence, goaltending and having a great offensive outing. The Hawks now look to finish off the Flyers tonight, but know it will be no easy task as Fort Garry will be looking to redeem themselves.

Puck Drop is slated for 6pm at the Notre Dame Arena.

GO HAWKS GO!

The Hawks have their oppenent....and going by the last 3 games these two teams have played, it's going to be a barnburner.

The Sturgeon Heights Blackhawks will take on the Fort Garry Flyers Red in of best of 3 series for the WMHA 10A1 Championship, starting tonight at the Notre Dame Arena. Puck Drop is at 6:15pm.

The two teams came close in almost every category this year. They tied for points in the regular season, they tied in the season series...two of the best and very alike, will now see, who will take home the big prize. The Hawks knocked the Flyers down to the B-Side on March 15th, but they clawed back, beating a hungry Saint Boniface Seals team to get back into the championship.

This should be a great series so make sure you bring your noismakers and support your 2011-2012 S.H. Blackhawks!

FROM ORDINARY JOE TO OVERTIME HERO - HAWKS EN ROUTE TO CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Posted by: Tim Brewer on Fri Mar 16th 2012 9:51am

If there was a hard hat in the dressing room that went to the most blue collar player on the Hawks roster, Joe Kraus would have it.

Last night the consistent effort and hard work he puts in game in and game out paid off in a big way. At 6:45 into overtime last night against the Fort Garry Flyers, a player not known for shooting the puck, took his shot....and it was a beauty, going over the glove of Fort Garrys goaltender and sending the Sturgeon Creek Blackhawks into the City Championship.

Trailing 3-1 in the 2nd period, Jalen Hoilett inched the Hawks within 1, scoring with just over a minute left in the second. He would repeat this in the 3rd period, putting in another goal at 10:55 in the 3rd and sending the game to OT. And we all know the outcome of that.

So for the second straight year 10 out of 12 players on the Hawks roster will be headed into the City Championship. The best of 3 final starts off Monday, March 19th at the Notre Dame Arena on Provencher. Our opponent is yet to be determined, but it will be either St. Boniface Red, St. Boniface White or Fort Garry Red again. With any 3 of these teams, all the boys will need their hard hats on, because the real work is about to start. GO HAWKS GO!
