EPHL League Wind-Up meeting

Posted by: Allan Unrath on Thu Apr 05th 2012 12:58pm

Summary of League meeting notes Apr 4th, 2011. These were forwarded by league commisionaire Dave. Notes in " marks are my comments.

Icehawk Rapper

1. 2012-2013 deposits. all above teams except: canucks, coyotes, chops have paid. the others can send your cheques to me at 3586 waddell cres s4n 7k6

2. Great Western year end party. Scott Klass of the Oilers has booked the party on saturday april 14/12. 8.00 pm. Scott is confirming the location of the party with the GW rep. It will likely be at an East Regina location. More particulars to follow.

"This would conflict with the Devil's pool party. Still some work to do on the Great Western side. If it happens, may be an option to go guzzle a few GW at the wind-up, change into our speedos and head to the Devils."

3. Great Western Beer Rebate. The Icehawks won the "most receipts" award with over 300. They win some stuff from GW and get a keg party. To get your $$cash rebate from GW, fill out the attached form and mail your receipts to the GW rep. They will send you a cheque. Scott Klass can help you if you have any questions. Don't forget, you can start collecting your receipts for next year right now to submit for next year.

"Another league championship and GW beer award recipient for the Icehawks. What a year! GW has treated us well, we received a few free dozen from them last year for the wind-up, this just formalizes the process. It was funny to see how quickly the teams conceded when I mentioned we had over 300 dozen receipts (307)."

4. discussion about reducing the number of games per year, getting rid of the monday games, balgonie ice , etc. led to a majority agreement to add 1 new team to the league for next year. this will drop approx 3 games off each teams schedule for next year. We will begin the process of getting a new team over the next month or so. We discussed what qualifications a new team will need, probationary period, roster etc. I have a list of teams that have been asking to get in for many years. it is only fair to ask them in order.
"Note this was not unanimous but we live in a democratic society so I guess we live with the decison. I'm sure there will be ample opportunity for those wishing more icetime to join the Devils or Conexus team occasionally"

5. Each year we expect to be offered the same ice times at the EPHL rink, but as you know, we have lost some ice times over the years and/or had to take later ice times. If anyone ever hears about open ice times at balgonie or pilot butte (good start times) do not pass up the opportunity to grab those ice times. email me asap and we'll go after it.
"Thought process was grab anything we can get if its a reasonable time, teams can always be added to the league."

6. league account. there is close to $7000.00 in the league account. there was some discussion about whether we should give teams a rebate based on how long they have been in the league. As well, it was agreed we need to keep $$ in the account in case a team folds and we need to pay for their ice. nothing was officially decided. we can discuss this further in the fall.
"I was a bit surprised to learn the amount was this high although it is only slightly more than 1 team's league fees for a year. Although nothing officially decided, most discussion seemed to agree with some kind of rebate but leave some behind to cover unexpected costs."

7. we want to update the contact list/email/ phone# before next year. this list will be attached to the league schedule. i'll let you all know when i want emails about this. don't send them now.

8. teams playing with 6 or less players. there was some discussion about teams that only have 6 or less players. this can cause some problems. We know sometimes circumstances happen where teams can't find players. no problem if this happens once in a while, but repeat offender teams will be tracked and a solution required. email me when this occurs so we can keep track.
"Not sure this is a big issue, we seem to lose more games than we win when we face a short benched opposition. In any case, the reporting has been formalized and if one team continually dresses a low number of players, the league will discuss."

2011-12 Season over for IceHawks

Posted by: Allan Unrath on Mon Apr 02nd 2012 10:45am

A picture is worth a thousand words!
A picture is worth a thousand words!

The Icehawk 2011-12 season came to an end on Wed, Mar 28th when they took on the Canucks. And although the Icehawks were on the short end of a 5-2 score, they were once again crowned league champs. This was due to a complicated EPHL formula which crowns the league champ based on the win-loss record of the last 5 games of the year and goals for and against. The Icehawks record in their last 5 games was 4 wins and a single loss and a goals for/against of 28/19. Conrgatulations Icehawks.

Very rarely do the Canucks come with a poor squad and this game was no exception. But what was an exception was the11 skaters they had compared to the Icehawks 10. The Rock kept the game close (estimated save percentage of .990, or at least probably felt like it) while many good scoring opportunties were missed in the Canuck end. The Icehawks played four D-man including Lord Byng, G.org, Spider and Big Jim. 2 lines of EKG-man/Cuz Will/Alvin and Cookie/Rapper/Marko played up front. Marko and EKG-man notched the Icehawk goals.

As with most games against the Canucks, no big issues surfaced. A few of the Icehawks took some spills as G.org claims to have heard every bone in his body crack as his ass hit the ice, Rapper fell over after Spider passed the puck in a most unusual spot causing Rapper to fall as he tried reaching for the puck (unfortunately no video is available to substantiate this) and Alvin and Big Jim also took memorable spills.

The final Icehawk record for 2011-12 will be recorded as 19-21-4 which differs slightly from the website record which is not able to account for automatic victories when opposition teams use ineligible players or borrow from the Icehawks.

Following the game the Icehawks gathered at center ice to salute all their fans as a thank you for their faithful dedication through the season. A mini-picnic night followed the game as dryland training plans were formalized. Devil's pool party, a wind-up and a few summer luncheons should leave the squad in good shape as they await the 2012-13 season.

Coyotes howl at IceHawks claims!

Posted by: Allan Unrath on Sun Mar 25th 2012 7:17pm

The Coyote's supplied the Icehawks opposition last Wednesday for what turned out to be the 2nd last game of the 2011-12 Mighty Icehawk campaign. Although a few comments like "points night", "crushing" and "shut-out" were heard or written leading up to the game, the Coyotes brought a couple ringers (one of which was pretty damn good) and put an end to the talk. They also recruited a late arival for the Icehawks, a fellow by the name of Darc Knight, to add to their roster of about 6 skaters.

The game was close throughout, with the Rock's shutout streak ending at about 110 minutes dating back to the middle of the Blues game. The Icehawks went with 4-D - Spider, Alvin, Spicoli and Byng (as in Lady Byng , Lafleur's new handle as voted by those present). Up front Marko/Devil/Big Jim formed a line as did Cookie/Rapper/EKG-man. The end result was a 5-5 tie with goalscorers for the Icehawks being Cookie with the hat-trick and singles to Marko and Rapper. But given the fact the Coyotes used an Icehawk player for a sub, according to EPHL rule 45.11.23, the Icehawks are awarded the victory.

A few other evening and game highlites included:

- EKG-man offering to help the Devil rub his groin area with a heat rub
- Devil (thankfully) turning down the offer
- Byng having to politely explain to an Ugly Coyote pickup that we don't lip off an opposition player after blasting him in the foot with a shot
- Bros Paul being a healthy scratch due to family conflicting hockey schedules but finding time for a quick pre-game refreshment
- no pre-game Elton John or Captain and Tennille "Muskrat Love" songs from Alvin
- Spider trying to deflect a Coyote pass off his shin into his own net but being stopped by the Rock on a great save

The final Icehawk Game is scheduled for Wed at 10:15 against the Canucks. This will be the Icehawk's opportunity to finish with a 500 season with a win, players to drop a few pounds before the final weigh-in and the last chance to consume enough beer to join the 100 beer club.

The Drive is Alive!

Posted by: Allan Unrath on Mon Mar 19th 2012 8:01am

The Icehawk playoff drive continued it's successful run on Saturday night as the Icehawks celebrated St Patrick's Day by defeating the Rebels 9-0. Yes, you read it right, 9-0, with the shut-out hat presented to The Rock following the game. The Icehawks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on the first shift but after that they came slowly but steadily. This unique combination of a quick start with slow steady pressure to follow may be attributable to Alvin's song list on his Ipod where he mixes good dressing room rock with soft mellow selections from such artists as Wham, Elton John, Abba .......

The line of Cookie/Rapper/Gallo filled in for the Amigo line, the Johnson line was together once again and Alvin/Spicoli/Uncle Puetz made another. This full three line format worked well as Lafleur, Spider and Darc Knight played a strong 3-man D to allow the full 3 lines to stay intact. Scoring was spread out among 9 Icehawks with Spicoli, Alvin, Cuz Will, Rapper, Cookie, Gallo, Uncle Puetz, EKG-man and Lafleur all notching singles. This means the only hat presentation of the night was the shut-out hat.

In addition to celebrating the shutout, the Icehawks celebrated St Patrick's day with a mini-picnic. A variety of green food and beverages were served with some suggesting every Saturday night game should be mini-picnic night!

The present three game winning streak ties this season's longest winning streak. As the Icehawks peak at the right time, their playoff run continues on Wed night at 8:45 against the Ugly Coyotes.

Big Johnsons dominate!

Posted by: Allan Unrath on Fri Mar 16th 2012 8:55am

Johnsons not just good for hockey!
Johnsons not just good for hockey!

The Icehawks extended their winning streak to 2 games and moved their playoff record to 2-0 with a dramatic come-from-behind 9-7 win over the Blues in Tuesday night EPHL play.

The Icehawks started the game with 2 lines and a rover, a combination that worked well in their previous game. But 2 or 3 shifts into the game, Rovin' Razor had to leave with an undisclosed lower body injury. That left the full Johnson line (together for the first time in a very long while) and Rapper/Alvin/Cookie to carry the load up front. D players included Spicoli, Spider, Big Jim and Lafleur. The Rock backstopped the win sporting a new helmet (and new pants but they weren't quite ready for game time) which obviously worked well with many shots stopped and turned aside.

The Icehawks found themselves down 7-3 following a 3 goal surge by the Blues with about 30 minutes left to play. Then the Icehawks slowly started the come back and when they made it 7-5 one could sense they were starting to believe in themselves. And by the time the buzzer sounded, they had scored 6 unanswered goals.

Not even Mr Purple Pants, playing for the Blues for the first time in years (at least aginst the Icehawks) wasn't even enough, nor shifty, stumbly #19 who always seems to find a way to score.

The Johnson line accounted for all but one goal as Bros Paul notched 4, EKG-man added a hat trick and Cuz Will added a single. Rapper added a single so the Johnson's couldn't claim total dominance of the scoreboard.

Although Razor's injury will remain undisclosed through the playoff run, he does propose an interesting thoery on why it may have happened. It dawned on him, that since he gave up beer for Lent, he has been injured. And just to disprove the theory of coincidence, he presents further evidence. He suggests we look closely at the IR list:
- Darc Knight, doesn't drink, gets banged up in a motorbike accident and from that incident and others -must wear 3 pounds of magnets when he plays
- Roadrunner, after a spectacular start to the year, a year of swearing off beer consumption after hockey, pulls a groin and is out for the year

You must admit he might be on to something. He fears he has offended the beer gods.

The Icehawks will continue their drive for 12 with a third straight win on Saturday night against the Rebels at 8:30.

A reminder that Saturday's game has been declared mini-picnic night in recognition of St Patrick's Day.
