Mendham Notches First W of Season at Essex Holiday Tournament
Posted by: Michael Ferrone on Sat Dec 30th 2017 2:11pm
Mendham beat Nutley 6-4 to snap its eight game losing streak and send the Minutemen into 2018 with a taste of victory.
Jake Marszalek notched five of the six goals (his 12th on the year) and had an assist in the other goal scored by Jordan Larrabee, who collected his first Varsity Goal of his career and also helped out on one of the goals by Marszalek. Tanner Brown continues to deny opponents by making 56 saves on 60 shots.
Prior to the Nutley game, Mendham played well against last year's NJ Public A State Champion Runner-up Watchung Hills, even though they lost 9-1, the team was tied 1-1 late into the 2nd Period on a goal by Marszalek, when WH responded with eight unanswered goals.
The team battled Verona the next night and took an early one goal lead, the first of two on the night by Marszalek. Verona responded with two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead heading into the Second. Neither team could score in the middle frame, but Verona scored early in the third to give them a 3-1 lead. Mendham came back swinging with Marszalek scoring his 2nd of the night to cut the lead to 3-2. With the goalie pulled, the Minutemen pounded several shots but could not secure the equalizer and the Verona team was able to score an empty netter with 5 seconds remaining.

Tanner Brown Hits Century Mark with Career Saves
Posted by: Michael Ferrone on Sun Dec 24th 2017 1:22pm
Senior goal keeper Tanner Brown recorded the 1,000th save of his Mendham scholastic hockey career.
The save came against Vernon on December 23, 2017. Tanner has totaled 1,031 saves in his four years with 315 in his freshman year, 230 as a sophomore, 270 his third year and 216 saves in only six games in this his senior year
Mendham has dropped its last three games to Halversen division foes Kinnelon, WMC and Vernon. Scoring goals for Mendham has been Jake Marzsalek with four goals in the last three games, Ryan Bruin and Sean Mason has each scored two goals apiece in these last three games.
Mendham looks to right the ship over the Holiday as they take on last year‘s Public A State Champion runner-up Watchung Hills on 12/26, followed by Verona on 12/27 and Nutley on 12/29 all games are at Codey Arena in the Essex County Holiday Tournament.
Mendham Hockey would like to wish all of its players, their families, coaches, fans and friends a very Merry Christmas.
What a Week!

After opening the season to the newly assigned Mennen Division team, Roxbury, Mendham took to the ice to take on Halversen Division Rival Madison, currently ranked Number 10 in the State for Public schools and then follow up with a road trip out to Sklylands to face the home town favorite Sparta-Jefferson on a Saturday matinee and culminate the week with mega-Morris County powerhouse and Perennial State Championship contender Randolph.
Well the Minutemen fought hard against Madison, but lost 8-1. Sophomore Stefan Michura scored his first Varsity goal and Mendham's only for the night.
Later in the week, Mendham, slowly regaining its full team back; minus four injured players, took on Sparta-Jefferson at the Sklylands Arena. The game saw lots of penalties and was a hard and punishing one in which the home team walked away with the most goals: but also the most PIMs and a DQ. Jake Marszalek picked up where he left off last season by scoring Mendham's lone tally via a shortie.
On Thursday, Mendham was welcomed back to the Mennen Arena to open their home season against perennial state powerhouse/champions Randolph Rams. However, both teams walked away from the Mennen Arena disappointed as the game was postponed due to a cannon of a shot from an undisclosed Mendham Player. The shot during pre-game warm-up shattered the supposedly unbreakable glass along the boards. With the replacement glass not being able to be installed, both teams agreed to postpone the game and reschedule at a future date, if possible.
Milestone Achievement News is in the Future:
Senior Goalie - Tanner Brown is only 14 shots away from facing 1,000 shots for his scholastic career.
Even better, he is 73 saves away from 1,000 saves. We expect Tanner to eclipse these milestones on Friday 12/15 and Monday 12/18.
Mendham Season Opener - Bruin Nets Hat Trick in Loss to Roxbury
Posted by: Michael Ferrone on Sun Nov 26th 2017 3:29pm
Given the unique opportunity to open up the NJ High School Hockey Season with a matinee game against newly assigned Mennen Division foe and former Halversen Rival Roxbury at the Aspen Ice Arena on Saturday, Nov 25, the young and very short-handed Minutemen lost 9-3.
Sophomore Ryan Bruin netted three goals to complete the Hat Trick in the third period. Bruin potted the third when he took a pass from his LW Dustin Ferrone and promptly fired it past the Gaels goalie. The goal re-energized the team by moving them to within striking distance.
Although the game seemed out of reach going into the third period, Sr Goalkeeper Tanner Brown kept Roxbury from putting the game away by making several amazing saves on the 43 shots faced, to allow Mendham to remain in the game.
Bruin's first goal came off of a feed from Ferrone who dished over to a hard-working Austin Shastay digging behind the net to center the pass to Bruin, who promptly netted the goal for Mendham's first of the season. Bruin's second goal was an unassisted goal in the third period.
Mendham takes on Halversen Rival Madison on Wednesday, November 29 7:45 PM at Mennen Arena.
