Marszalek Hat Trick Gives Mendham Fourth Win in Five Games

Excerpts reposted from the latest Observer-Tribune article about Monday's game against Bernards

Jake Marszalek thinks he knows what the Mendham High School hockey team needs to do to get this season in high gear.
And he thinks the Minutemen demonstrated it on Monday evening in a 6-1 victory over Bernards-Somerville that lifted them to 4-5-3.
“We just need to move the puck and play as a team,” Marszalek insisted. “We showed that tonight. When we move the puck, good things happen.”
Marszalek understands that better than anybody after being the recipient of a total of five assists on his way to a hat trick against Bernards. The three goals doubled his season output. He also added an assist for four points on the evening.
Mendham started slowly this season with a narrow loss to Madison and a 4-0 loss to Randolph. The Minutemen continued to sputter through two more losses and two ties before finally picking up their initial win – 2-1 over Millburn – the day after Christmas. Now, they’ve won four of five.
Against Bernards on Monday, they sure didn’t start slow, nabbing a Max Scheidl goal off Mike DiMaio and Jordan Larrabee assists just three minutes in, then adding two Marszalek goals over a 2 1-2 minute span two minutes later. The first of those came off assists from Aiden Wright and Tim Naval and made it 2-0. Wright finished with three assists.
The second of his three goals was the result of a long pass from Wright out of his own zone that found Marszalek ahead of the defense at mid-ice and one-on-one with the Bernards goalie. He easily beat him for a 3-0 lead less than eight minutes in.
“(Aiden) saw me up the center slot and made a great pass,” Marszalek said. “I made a quick move when I saw the goalie was and wristed it over his shoulder.”
Meanwhile, the defense was denying short-handed Bernards anything, allowing only one shot on goal in the first period. Ryan Bruin added to the Mendham lead on a power play a minute-and-a-half into the second period when he sent a rocket through traffic from just below the blue line to make it 4-0. Wright and Scheidl picked up assists on the score.
