Excerpts reposted from the latest Observer-Tribune article about Saturday's game against the Wolfpack
Written by Kelly Fenton, 12/11/2016
The penalty boxes surely did overflow when West Morris Central took on Mendham in a rivalry that could hardly be called friendly on Saturday afternoon at Mennen Arena.
But despite 105 total penalty minutes, the game redeemed itself in the end when the Minutemen forged a 2-2 tie with a goal with just nine seconds left.
Dustin Ferrone took a pass from Ryan McCann and ripped it home to complete a rally from two goals down in the final eight minutes.
Earlier, McCann had been the hero by swatting away two empty-net shots. In the closing seconds he skated to the top of the right circle and sent one across to the left circle, where Ferrone was waiting with the equalizer.
“We knew we had limited time but I was lucky enough to get a nice pass from (McCann) and I was able to get the shot off,” said Ferrone of his second goal of the night and second of his career. “I don’t even know what happened. I just wanted to get the puck on net and maybe somebody can get a rebound and poke it back in.
“They had a two-goal lead and we bounced right back and that’s as good as a win.”

Ferrone Tallies Twice in Mendham Comeback
Excerpts Reposted from the Daily Record

Mendham’s Dustin Ferrone found himself in the right place at the right time in third period against rival sister school West Morris on Saturday. Twice, in fact.
The junior winger scored a pair of third-period goals, including the game-tying tally with just nine seconds remaining, to rally the Minutemen to a 2-2 tie against the Wolfpack in a game that featured superb goaltending and 105 total penalty minutes between the rivals.
“It’s a rivalry and it was definitely high intensity out there,” said Ferrone, who now has three goals. “We knew we had to pick up our play in the third period.”....
.... West Morris began the third period on the power play and Euvino kept his team in the game with a handful of dazzling saves as the Wolfpack moved the puck around and created numerous scoring chances with the man advantage.
“I did what I had to do to try to keep us in it,” Euvino said. “We were facing a hot goalie and we knew we just had to keep shooting and eventually they’d start going in.”....
.... The Minutemen finally cashed in on the major power play advantage with 7:23 remaining when Ferrone found a rebound of a Tim Naval shot in the low slot and slid the puck under Ward while falling to the ice to cut the West Morris lead to 2-1.
Ferrone then tied the game in the final seconds, taking a pass from defenseman Ryan McCann, who had moments earlier blocked a West Morris attempt at an open net, and firing a high shot past Ward.

Mendham Ties Sparta-Jefferson 4-4

In another nail-biting Halvorsen Division battle on the ice, the Minutemen earned a hard-fought tie with the new Sparta-Jefferson United team with strong defensive effort from Brian Crooker, Ryan McCann, Jordan Larrabee and Sean Mason.
Coming from a two-goal deficit from the first period, Tim Naval buried a power play slapshot from the point off the face-off win from Max Scheidl. Soon after, Scheidl zipped a wrist shot past the goalie to tie up the game in the second period.
Dustin Ferrone pounded home his own rebound with a hard-working goal in front of the net. Mendham’s final goal came in the third period with Ryan Bruin crashing the net and capitalizing on assists from Max Scheidl and Mike DiMaio.
Tanner Brown was solid in net with 29 saves.
