Well so ends our short playoff run, with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the Dollard Capitals.
The kids played their hearts out. We staked ourselves to a 3-1 lead midway through the second, thanks to Thomas' great scoring touch and playmaking. His pass to Caro, parked on the doorstep? I don't think we saw a prettier goal all season! Shortly after, though, we could feel the momentum start to swing as the Caps came on strong. With Sam down to an injury, the coaches decided to put our two girls back on D, as we have often done with success.
But this time, I think we messed with the forward lines a bit too much, and we were caught a couple of times without backchecking on the ice (some kids do it well, others not so much!)
At the end, we pulled Alejandro for a six-on-four, but it was too little too late.
I'm really proud of our kids, and you should be too! They have learned a lot and come a long way, as individuals and as a team! We had a lot of fun!
We are working on getting a practice or maybe an exhibition game in the next little while, then it's on to Ottawa to end up our season.
See you soon!
Well I guess I forgot to blog for the last couple of weeks, but now's a good time to get back at it!
We finished our season yesterday in a convincing fashion, with a 4-1 win over the Royals. Missed a shutout by about 1.2 seconds!
This was an interesting game ... for a couple of reasons.
Starting in goal ... Matthew made his debut as a goalie, started the game and gave us a solid first half. And then we put Alej in and he provided the usual strong performance we have come to expect lately.
Great job by our defense pairs. They blocked shots like Josh Gorges, cleared the front of the net, and moved the puck out of our zone, just like we practiced. Sam, Kyl, Kayla, Mathis: Excellent job! We didn't allow a single breakaway until the very end, due to solid tough play and great positioning along the blue line.
Missing 3 regulars, we rolled with two forward lines, so everybody got a ton of ice time. We played a strong game, first on the puck, nice passes, a good team game. Marco, what a great shot, i knew you could put one in for me! Oli, Francis, JC, Kellyann, Caro: Awesome game, first on the puck!
Everybody had a lot of fun, you could see it from the big smiles on their faces!
So we finish the season with a .500 record, solidly in seventh place, and getting stronger. I'm very pleased with our kids!
Looks like we'll start the playoffs next Sunday March 11, against the Knights. If you're curious, the playoff schedule in on the CHL website. You'll be getting the official invitations as soon as all is confirmed.
Meanwhile, we have 3 more practices before the playoffs start, hope to see you all there!
Take care, see you at the rink!
Our Marquis skated the West Island Remparts to a 2-2 tie on Saturday, at Dorval. We played a pretty good game, got off to a hot start with a goal just 16 seconds in. But then we stopped skating and let them get back in the game late. On the other hand, a tie is a big improvement over our first meeting with the Remparts early in the season, which we lost 4-1. Good job overall!
Last night, we got beat 4-1 by a pretty strong Dollard Capitals team. The bounces didn't go our way, we had two or three open nets and couldn't capitalize. Our kids played well, but towards the end some frustration set in and they were guilty of trying to do too much at times, like trying to carry the puck the length of the ice. An understandable reaction to the Caps uncanny ability to intercept our passes and clearing attempts.
We have to keep at it, continued emphasis on team play, positions, and passing.
I don't know about you, but I find the after school games and practices are rough. The kids just aren't sharp after a long day at school. That being said, we have another 5 pm practice Thursday.
And then, 3 festival/exhibition games this weekend at Bonaventure. Bring your long johns! Should be a lot of fun.
A shout out to Alejandro, who played two more great games!
See you at the rink!
Another sweet victory over the Barons, this time by a margin of 2-1.
The kids were pumped up to meet their buddies and rivals again, and came out in what was probably our best skating and hardest working game yet.
And to top it off, another two goals by our resident sharpshooter Thomas! I've lost count but I bet he hasn't!
So that's 5 out of 6 possible points for the all-Pierrefonds weekend. I don't know if you're keeping track, but that makes us .500 overall including tournament play. In our last ten we're 5-2-3. Not bad at all.
Practice Thursday, we need to work on getting the puck out of our own zone, and as always, more skating.
See you at the rink!
Well here we are two-thirds of the way through our All-Pierrefonds weekend, and I can't complain at this point.
Yesterday we tied the Royals in a 4-4 battle. We played a great first two periods, lots of passing, good positional play, and staked ourselves to a 4-1 lead. But then ... as so often in hockey ... the momentum shifted and the Royals roared back to tie the game 4-4. Our kids kind of lost their wheels in the third period. Oh well, that's the way it goes, sometimes.
And then this morning, a 3-2 victory over the Barons! Fun game! A comeback from a 2-0 deficit. In this game we did some experimenting with using defense-men Matthew and Joshua as forwards. In the first period we were back on our heels, the boys not being used to playing forward didn't help. But slowly things shifted around, and then late in the game we switched the lines around and started putting a bit more pressure. Lots of fun!
I'm proud of these kids. When they try hard and play their very best they can skate with any team in this league.
Hats off to Alejandro who had two more solid games. All that hard work at practice is starting to show its reward!
So that's 3 out of 4 possible points, with one more game against the Barons tomorrow. No doubt they'll be trying to get their revenge, but we'll be ready!
See you tomorrow, at the rink!
