The Okanagan Hockey Academy ended the season in the final game of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League against the Edge School. OHA ended up losing the game 2-0 but put together a gutsy effort with a short bench and an exhausted group of girls. The team fought until the final buzzer and after getting down 1-0 at the end of the first period, kept battling and pushing back through the second and third. The score was 1-0 all the way through until the last 1:16 of the game when the Edge school sealed the game on a power play goal. Despite the girls putting together a great effort on a 4 minute power play and coming close a number of times to tying the game at 1, the Edge were able to hold on to the lead and Win the CSSHL Championship. Overall, it was a good game and we are proud of the girls. Their work ethic, commitment to getting better and determination throughout the season is the reason we have had another great season, in just our second year of the program. We are proud of how the girls matured and have grown, not only as athletes but as students and people as well. We have had some tough times throughout the season, but the team used them as learning experiences and moved forward in getting better and that’s what TEAMS are supposed to do. Great Job Ladies!!
The Okanagan Hockey Academy faced the Pursuit of Excellence in the CSSHL semi-finals Saturday night. OHA came up with the win beating the Pursuit of Excellence in a shootout to advance to the finals on Sunday. It was one of the best team efforts put together by the team this season. Not only were the girls of this season’s team a part of the success, the former players that have now moved on were a big part of this win. The pride that the Alumni showed in this victory was an outstanding thing for the coaching staff to see. The pride in the program and the progress it has made was shared by all the girls and their families.
OHA started the scoring with 8:17 left in the first when Daniella Calogheros took a shot from the point that went top shelf on a pass from Sabrina Hosner and Natasha Panahi. That lead stood until 2:36 left in the second when POE tied the game at one heading into the 3rd. The shots were fairly tight through two periods with POE outshooting us 23-21. OHA took another lead at the 13:21 mark of the 3rd with Hannah Miller scoring a great goal off of a great pinch by Alexa Ranahan, some hard work by Emily Gervais and an outstanding shot by Miller past the POE goaltender. This lead stood until 3:20 in the third when Pursuit tied the game and sent it into OT, locked at 2. Through 4vs.4 and 3vs.3 OHA and Pursuit stayed tied at 2, sending the exciting game to a 5 player shootout. Miller started the scoring off for OHA on the first shot of the shootout and OHA’s second goal was scored by the 4th shooter, Brielle Bellerive. Hayley Dowling did not allow a single goal in the shootout for OHA! Both teams worked very hard and showed a lot of passion. It was a fun and exciting game to be a part of and a big win for OHA.

The CSSHL league finals were a great finish to the season for the Okanagan Hockey Academy. However, we started the weekend off with a lack luster effort against the Edge School on Friday night losing 7-1 and getting outshot 38-18. We did not compete nor did we show any guts or drive to push back in the 3rd. We got down earlier 4-0 in the first but showed some great character fighting back in the 2nd and out shooting them 10-6 and making it 4-1. Despite this fight back in the second, the 3rd proved to be a disappointing period seeing the team crumble and “give up”. We got outshot 18-1 and got scored on 3 more times. It was a poor start to the weekend but ended up being a learning process that we believe helped us be successful moving forward!
The Second game came against Banff Academy. We started the game off strong getting up 4-1 in the first and outshooting them 18-8. Tessa Hare started off the scoring for OHA just 1:49 seconds into the game, followed by a goal from Natasha Panahi at the 15:02 mark of the first. Banff Academy made it 2-1 with a goal at the 6:34 mark but the girls responded with two late period goals coming from Alyssa Erickson and Taylor Esselink. The second period saw us let up, slowed down and have absolutely no focus on the task at hand. We got a little ahead of ourselves and lost the period 2-1. Banff came out working hard and really made us pay for our mistakes. We refocused in the 3rd scored three more goals to make it 8-3 and finish off the last regular season CSSHL game.

The OHA female prep team put together a great week in Washington at the JWHL Challenge Cup. The team put together a 2-2-1 record and played some great hockey throughout the weekend. We learnt some great lessons about our team and grew as individuals and a group throughout the weekend.
We started the weekend off against the Washington Pride and through our nerves and lack of confidence playing at this level we tied the game 5-5. It was a great start to the tournament and proved to not only everyone on the outside but ourselves that we were a hockey team that could compete with anyone. Down 5-4 with 12 seconds left to go, Zoe Battie scored the game tying goal off a shot from Alexa Ranahan and a great heads up play by Hannah Miller. Good start by the team!
The second game came against the National Sports Academy and the game was tied until 1:43 left in the 3rd period when NSA scored to make it 3-2 and adding an empty netter with 22 second left to go in the game. This was a disappointing loss for the team because it was a game we let slip away! We outshot NSA 28-17 and it showed us that you cannot let up at all and any second not played with focus and intensity can result in losing a game that should have been a win. Good lesson for everyone!
The third game saw us up against a very strong NAHA team. We started the game off well with the shot 11-8 in NAHA's favor but our girls played a solid brand of hockey and the team worked very hard. Unfortunately, the score was not a great indicator of that as we were down 5-1 after the first period. The team did not come out with as much jump in the second and had very little fight. NAHA scored 4 more goals in the second out playing our team all over the ice. One of the major goals and core values of our team is that no matter what, we fight with all we have until the buzzer goes with class and integrality. That’s what the girls did, nobody hung their heads and we ended up winning the third period 1-0 and outshooting them 8-5 in the period. Again, every game is a lesson and this game was no different!
The next game for OHA was against the Colorado Selects. A game that we knew was ours to win and the team did not disappoint. We outshot the Selects with a game total of 44-12 and control the pace and tempo of the game. With that said, the game score was closer than we would have liked it to be. Colorado’s goaltender was solid for her team and made 42 saves to keep the game at a 2-1 score. Again, a lesson was learned as the girls let up for one second with 52 seconds left to go in the game, to let the Selects score and come within one. With that said, the team pulled out our first win of the tournament.
To finish the tournament we played the Boston Shamrocks, another JWHL team that we knew we could beat. We knew that the game’s outcome would be determined by how our team preformed and worked. The first period was not exactly the way our team wanted to come out to start the game with Boston outshooting us 11-1 and dominating the play. This was an extremely disappointing start to the game but ended up being one of the biggest moments of learning for OHA as a team and some individuals. Hayley Dowling keep the score at zeros and gave our team a chance to bounce back. Boston scored just four minutes into the second despite the much better start to the 2nd period by OHA. We keep working our way through the tough times and scored to tie the game with 3:23 left to go in the period. It was a well fought second with the shots even at 10 apiece. The 3rd was another well fought period with Brielle Bellerive scoring the game winning goal for us at 10:44 in the period. We held them off for the remainder of the game and edge them out 2-1.
Overall, this was amazing trip to Washington, DC. A great tournament, great competition and most importantly a great learning experience for the players and coaches.
